Tasks & to-dos: replace Google Tasks

5 private options, our pick first. Every download link goes straight to the source — F-Droid, the developer's GitHub releases (one tap into Obtainium), the Play listing you can install anonymously through Aurora Store, or the official site. None of these are affiliate links. Updated October 2026.

These Google Tasks alternatives are for to-do lists and reminders on Android that don't depend on a Google account. Tasks.org is the main pick: open source, with widgets and reminders, and sync over open CalDAV. jtx Board and Super Productivity cover journals and time tracking.

The trade-off is setup. Tasks inside Gmail and Calendar just appear, while a private setup needs a CalDAV server, such as Nextcloud or a hosted provider, if you want sync across devices. If you only use one phone, you can replace Google Tasks in 2026 with no account at all.

How to switch from Google Tasks

  1. On a phone that still has your Google account, install Tasks.org and add Google Tasks as a sync account. Your existing lists then appear inside the app, which makes the move easier.
  2. Set up the new home for your tasks: local lists for a single device, or a CalDAV account such as Nextcloud for sync. Tasks.org can connect to CalDAV itself, or through DAVx⁵.
  3. Move tasks from the Google lists into the new lists, then check due dates, subtasks and repeating tasks. Recurring items are the ones most likely to need a quick fix by hand.
  4. Set up reminders and add a Tasks.org widget to the home screen. Android may restrict background apps, so allow notifications and exempt the app from battery optimization if reminders arrive late.
  5. Remove the Google Tasks account from Tasks.org once the new lists are complete. Then stop creating tasks from Gmail or Google Calendar so nothing new lands on the Google side.
  6. If you sync, check the result on a second device. A task you tick off on the phone should disappear from the same list on your computer after the next sync.

Tasks & to-dos questions

Do I need a server to use Tasks.org?

No. Tasks.org works fully offline with local lists, and reminders and widgets still work without any account. You only need a server if you want the same lists on other devices. Options include a self-hosted Nextcloud with Nextcloud Tasks, a hosted CalDAV provider, or the developer's own Tasks.org sync service.

Can I share a to-do list with my family?

Yes, through the server rather than the app. On Nextcloud, a shared task list syncs over CalDAV to everyone who has access, and each person can use Tasks.org, jtx Board or another CalDAV app. Shared lists depend on your server's sharing features, so check those before you promise the family a shared grocery list.

What about tasks I created from Gmail messages?

That link doesn't survive the move. Google Tasks can point back to an email in Gmail, but a CalDAV task is a plain item with a title, notes, dates and reminders. If a task depends on a message, paste the key details or the sender's name into the task notes before you leave Google.

"Add to Obtainium" — what's that?

Obtainium installs apps straight from the developer's GitHub releases and keeps them updated. Tap the button on your phone and the app is pre-filled; first-time setup takes ten minutes.
