Fairphone 5 calls work on Nura edge
Nura's September update and LINMOB's roundup point to working Fairphone 5 calls and camera progress on the edge channel.

What changed
Nura, the project formerly known as postmarketOS, published a September update listed as Nura in 2026-09: FP5, ME30 Call Audio Routing on October 11. The public blog index gives the headline and date, and LINMOB’s October 11 weekly mobile Linux roundup gives the practical detail: Fairphone 5 has calls and cameras working on Nura edge.
That matters because Fairphone 5 is a repairable Android phone with an unlockable bootloader, while Nura is a mainline Linux phone project rather than a degoogled Android ROM. For readers who want to reduce dependence on Google services, this is not a drop-in GrapheneOS or CalyxOS path. It is a different route: replacing Android with a Linux mobile distribution, accepting rougher app compatibility in exchange for a more conventional Linux stack.
LINMOB’s Weekly GNU-like Mobile Linux Update 41/2026 says Fairphone 5 has calls and cameras working on Nura edge. It also quotes a note that calling is supported on edge with systemd for Fairphone 5 and some other devices and distributions based on the sc7280-mainline kernel. The same roundup notes that the main camera works on Fairphone 5 with Nura edge and Phosh.
Why edge matters
The word edge is important. Nura’s stable download page is separate from the development channel, and the October 11 item is about recent development progress, not a promise that a Fairphone 5 owner should flash a daily driver today. Edge is where hardware enablement tends to appear first, and it can also carry breakage.
LINMOB’s roundup makes that tradeoff visible in the same section. It lists Nura edge breakage notes, including a system that may not boot after a postmarketos-base upgrade and another boot issue for kernels older than 7.2 with systemd. Those warnings do not cancel the Fairphone 5 progress, but they do frame it correctly: calls and cameras working on edge is a milestone for testers and port followers, not the same thing as a polished consumer release.
For degoogled-phone buyers, the relevant comparison is simple. A Pixel with GrapheneOS gives the strongest mature Android compatibility among privacy-focused options. A Murena or /e/OS phone keeps the Android app model with a different service layer. Nura on Fairphone 5 moves farther away from Android, so the appeal is strongest for people who value mainline Linux work, Phosh, systemd, and standard Linux packaging more than Play Store app compatibility.

The nearby software pieces
The same LINMOB roundup points to several adjacent Nura updates. It lists pmbootstrap 3.12.0 and says the tag should improve developer experience, including a fix for issues with the –fde argument to the install subcommand. For people testing Linux phones, full-disk encryption setup details are not cosmetic; install reliability affects whether a device can be tested without repeatedly rebuilding the same environment.
The roundup also lists mobile-config-firefox 5.5.1, described there as supporting both Firefox ESR 140 and Firefox ESR 153. That is relevant because mobile Linux users often depend on a browser that behaves well on small screens, and ESR transitions can be disruptive when downstream mobile configuration has to catch up.
None of this changes the Android ROM support map. GrapheneOS still officially supports Pixels, not Fairphone. If you want a mainstream degoogled Android phone, start with a device and OS compatibility check rather than assuming Linux phone progress means Android ROM support. Our phone support starting point is the better place to compare those paths.
What owners should do
If you own a Fairphone 5 and want a stable phone, do not treat this as a general upgrade recommendation. The sources describe Nura edge progress, and the same roundup mentions edge boot risks.
If you are testing Nura, read the October 11 Nura entry and LINMOB’s roundup before updating. Pay attention to calls, camera, Phosh, systemd, and any edge breakage notes that apply to your kernel.
If your priority is degoogled Android app compatibility, compare GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, LineageOS, and /e/OS separately in our degoogled OS comparison guide. Nura is a Linux-phone path, not a conventional Android replacement.
If you are buying hardware, treat Fairphone 5 Nura edge progress as encouraging for Linux-phone experimentation, not as confirmation that every daily-driver feature is complete.
