LineageOS Adds Galaxy A53 5G Support

LineageOS lists the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G on Android 17, with installation requiring Android 15 stock firmware and a full data wipe.

LineageOS Adds Galaxy A53 5G Support

What changed

LineageOS adds official support for the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G, identified by the device codename a53x. The project’s Galaxy A53 5G device entry lists LineageOS 24.0, based on Android 17, as the current version and names majaahh as the maintainer.

A daily custom-ROM support record says it detected the LineageOS addition on October 28, 2026. That record also identifies Android 17 as the version offered for a53x. This is a support change for one specific Samsung model, rather than a new general LineageOS release.

Owners should verify the codename before treating the build as compatible. The listed build is for a53x; a similar product name does not establish that another Samsung model can use the same images. LineageOS provides device-specific builds and installation instructions.

What the installation requires

The documented installation path is more involved than installing an ordinary Android update. The phone must be running Android 15 stock firmware before LineageOS is installed. The firmware requirement refers to the device-specific components supplied through Samsung’s stock operating system, not the Android version that LineageOS will run afterward.

The installation information also identifies several important details:

  • The Galaxy A53 5G is not treated as an A/B device by the LineageOS instructions.
  • Lineage recovery is written to the recovery partition.
  • Samsung Download mode and samloader-rs are used instead of the fastboot procedure common on Pixels and many other Android phones.
  • Installing the operating system requires formatting user data.

That final point makes preparation important. Unlocking the bootloader and formatting data remove locally stored files and accounts. A backup should therefore be completed and checked before beginning. The required Android 15 stock firmware should also be installed before any LineageOS image is flashed.

Recovery support is a separate development

Team Win published a separate recovery note for the same phone on October 28. It marks TWRP support as current, uses the same a53x codename, and describes the Galaxy A53 5G as a system-as-root device with an A-only partition configuration. The page also says the phone uses Dynamic Partitions.

That TWRP listing does not replace the recovery specified by LineageOS. The LineageOS installation path calls for its own recovery image, and owners should follow those device-specific instructions rather than combining steps from unrelated guides. The value of the TWRP page here is confirmation of the phone’s partition layout and recovery-specific behavior, including its statement that Magisk would use the recovery partition rather than the usual boot partition.

For someone seeking a degoogled setup, LineageOS does not require a Google-app package. The installation information treats Google Apps as an optional add-on, so an owner can omit that add-on and begin with the operating system’s minimal application set. Applications can then be selected according to the owner’s needs.

What Galaxy A53 owners should do

The practical decision is whether the benefits of Android 17 and an actively maintained LineageOS build outweigh the installation work and the security tradeoffs associated with an unlocked bootloader. LineageOS support does not change Samsung’s bootloader policy for a particular regional model, so owners must confirm that their exact handset permits unlocking before starting.

  1. Confirm that the phone is a Samsung Galaxy A53 5G with codename a53x.
  2. Back up photos, messages, authenticator data, downloads, and any other files that must survive a full wipe.
  3. Return to or update the phone to the required Android 15 stock firmware.
  4. Read the complete device-specific LineageOS instructions before issuing any flashing command.
  5. Use the prescribed Samsung Download mode and samloader-rs procedure, including the specified Lineage recovery image.
  6. Decide before the initial boot whether any optional add-on is needed; omit Google Apps if the goal is a Google-free installation.

People shopping specifically for a degoogled phone can also check the site’s model-specific operating-system lookup before buying. For existing Galaxy A53 5G owners, the important news is narrower and concrete: LineageOS lists this exact device, its official version is Android 17, and installation has a documented Samsung-specific path that erases user data.
