Tor Browser 16 Updates Android Interface

Tor Browser 16 moves Android toward Jetpack Compose and Material Design 3 while shifting the stable browser to Firefox ESR 153.

What changed in Tor Browser 16

Tor Browser 16.0 is the first stable release in this series based on Firefox ESR 153. The Tor Project says that change incorporates a year of upstream Firefox work. During the transition, the project reviewed and addressed more than 270 Bugzilla issues involving Firefox changes that could affect Tor Browser users’ privacy or security.

The Android interface is the most visible phone-specific change. According to the Tor Project’s detailed release announcement, large parts of the user interface have been updated to Material Design 3 as the browser continues adopting Jetpack Compose. The project describes Jetpack Compose as Google’s newer framework for native Android interfaces and says further interface work remains for later releases.

Tor Browser 16.0 also updates components used across its supported platforms. The changelog lists tor 0.4.9.15 and NoScript 13.6.37.1984. The stable release is offered for both Android and desktop systems.

Why the Android rebuild matters

The Android work is an interface modernization rather than a change to Tor Browser’s basic purpose. It still connects browsing traffic through the Tor network. What changes is the framework used to present and manage more of the browser’s controls.

An independent technical review of version 16.0 likewise describes large portions of the Android interface as moving to Jetpack Compose and Material Design 3. That review also confirms the Firefox ESR 153 base and the updated tor and NoScript components.

The Tor Project had to keep the Android package within Google Play’s 100 MB limit for APKs. Firefox for Android has continued to grow, so the project compressed built-in interface resources to remain under that limit. The same size restriction is why the Android package does not bundle the browser manual for offline reading. The desktop release does include the revamped manual offline.

For a degoogled phone, the practical point is that Tor Browser 16.0 remains an Android application rather than an operating-system feature. It can therefore be updated independently of GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, LineageOS, /e/OS, or another Android-based system, subject to the installation source and version offered for that device.

Privacy work behind the version change

Moving to a newer Firefox ESR base requires more than adopting its visible features. The Tor Project says its annual ESR transition audit examined upstream changes that might negatively affect privacy or security. The resulting changelog includes measures such as keeping the Reporting API disabled, disabling WebGPU until it has been audited, hiding AI-related settings, and redacting onion origins from Location.ancestorOrigins.

The redesigned Settings experience discussed in the release is primarily a desktop change. It reorganizes controls, gives Tor-specific Connection and Security Level pages a consistent appearance, and hides or warns about settings that could weaken privacy or increase fingerprintability. The optional generic-window-title feature is also described for desktop systems, not as an Android addition.

That distinction matters when reading the release notes: Android receives the Firefox ESR 153 transition, updated components, privacy-related fixes, and the newer interface framework, but not every desktop feature. The project says more refinement of the Android Material Design 3 interface is planned, so version 16.0 should not be read as the end of that migration.

What Android users should do

  1. Update Tor Browser from the trusted source already used on the phone, or follow the Android download link in the Tor Project’s release announcement.
  2. Open the browser’s version information and confirm that it reports Tor Browser 16.0 before relying on the new release.
  3. Review the refreshed interface and confirm that essential controls, including the selected security level and connection settings, still match your intended configuration.
  4. If the redesigned interface produces a reproducible problem, use the project’s support channel linked from the official announcement to report it.

Users do not need to change their phone’s degoogled operating system simply to receive this browser release. They should, however, keep both the operating system and Tor Browser updated: the browser update supplies the new Firefox and Tor components, while the OS remains responsible for the security of the wider device.
