The Fairphone (Gen. 6) is a repairable Dutch phone launched in June 2025. Murena sells it with /e/OS, its degoogled version of Android, already installed and the bootloader locked, so it is ready to use out of the box. In the US it costs $649.99 from Murena; in Europe it is €649 with /e/OS from Fairphone.

For a privacy buyer the draw is longevity and choice. Fairphone promises software support until 2033, and you can replace the battery, screen and ten other parts yourself. If /e/OS isn’t for you, CalyxOS, iodéOS and LineageOS all list it officially. Hardware is mid-range: a 6.31-inch 120 Hz LTPO OLED, Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage with a microSD slot and a 50 MP main camera with stabilisation.

The trade-offs are a modest IP55 rating, no headphone jack and limited US carrier support: Murena recommends T-Mobile and its MVNOs and says the phone isn’t compatible with Verizon. There is also a newer Gen. 6+ with 12 GB of RAM and a faster chip for $50 more.

  • /e/OS: Ships from Murena with /e/OS and a locked bootloader; Murena promises at least 8 years of software support with updates at least every two months.
  • CalyxOS: CalyxOS estimates security updates until June 2033 and relocks the bootloader after install.
  • iodéOS: iodé lists both the FP6 and FP6+ with installer support, a lockable bootloader, VoLTE/VoWiFi and 5G.
  • LineageOS: The LineageOS wiki lists model FP6 only; it does not mention the Gen. 6+.

Not available for this model

  • GrapheneOS: Fairphone's own support page says GrapheneOS does not support Fairphones.
  • Ubuntu Touch: Not on the Ubuntu Touch device list as of October 2026 (the Fairphone 5 is).
  • Nura (postmarketOS): Only in postmarketOS's 'testing' package category, not a supported device.
  • Sailfish OS: Sailfish OS does not list any Fairphone.

Privacy scores and effort levels are explained in how we score each system; the feature-by-feature OS table goes deeper.

Do you need to flash anything?

Fairphone keeps the bootloader unlockable, and on current software you no longer need an unlock code. Buying it from Murena means /e/OS is already installed, so you only need this to switch OS.

  1. Update to the latest system software, then tap Settings > About phone > Build number seven times.
  2. In Settings > System > Developer options, turn on USB debugging and OEM unlocking, and wait for the online verification.
  3. Connect to a computer with Android platform tools and run: adb reboot bootloader.
  4. Run fastboot flashing unlock and confirm on the phone (this wipes the phone).
  5. Boot to fastboot again and run fastboot flashing unlock_critical, then confirm (this wipes it again).
  6. Install your chosen OS, then relock with fastboot flashing lock_critical followed by fastboot flashing lock if that OS supports relocking.
Before you start
  • Fairphone's code generator page says codes are no longer needed; they're only for phones on old software versions.
  • OEM unlocking needs an internet connection to verify.
  • Relocking with an OS that has an older security patch than the previous one can brick the phone; Fairphone notes /e/OS uses the 5th of the patch month as its rollback date.
  • Installing another OS doesn't void the hardware warranty, but Fairphone may ask you to reinstall stock Android for a repair, and fixes for failed installs are paid.
  • In the US, Murena handles all hardware and software support for phones it sells.

How to install a private OS on the Fairphone (Gen. 6) with /e/OS

Short versions of each project's official guide. Always keep the official page open while you work: it has the exact files for your model and changes faster than any summary.

Setting up /e/OSPreinstalled

What you need: For a phone you already own: a Windows, macOS or Linux computer and a USB cable. The Easy Installer covers many models; others use a command-line guide on the device's page. Installing erases the phone.

Apps: microG built in, plus the App Lounge store that shows each app's trackers.

  1. Look up your exact model on the /e/OS device list and check whether it supports the Easy Installer.
  2. Download the Easy Installer (or the build and guide from the device page) on your computer.
  3. Turn on Developer options, USB debugging and OEM unlocking on the phone, and connect it.
  4. Follow the installer's screens: it unlocks, flashes /e/OS and, where possible, relocks the bootloader.
  5. Set up the phone. A Murena account is optional; you can skip it.
On the Fairphone (Gen. 6) with /e/OSAlready installed when bought from Murena or Fairphone's /e/OS version. To reinstall, Murena's web installer supports the FP6.

Updates: Monthly from the /e/ Foundation; Murena phones update over the air. Official instructions: /e/OS device list and install guides.

Installing CalyxOSModerate · official flasher

What you need: A Windows, macOS or Linux computer, a USB-C cable, and the CalyxOS device flasher plus the factory image for your exact model. Installing erases the phone.

Apps: microG, optional: a free re-implementation of Google services for push and maps. Bootloader: Yes on supported devices; the flasher locks it at the end.

  1. Download the device flasher for your computer and the factory image for your model from calyxos.org.
  2. On the phone, turn on Developer options and OEM unlocking (some brands need an unlock code first, see the bootloader section above).
  3. Restart into the bootloader (fastboot) mode and connect the phone.
  4. Run the flasher and follow its prompts. It unlocks the bootloader, flashes CalyxOS and locks the bootloader again.
  5. During setup, choose whether to turn on microG. You can change your mind later.
On the Fairphone (Gen. 6) with /e/OSUse CalyxOS's device-flasher for Windows, macOS or Linux. CalyxOS's FP6 page still links Fairphone's unlock-code page, but Fairphone says current software no longer needs a code.

Updates: From the Calyx Institute, monthly on supported devices. Official instructions: official CalyxOS install guide.

Installing iodéOSEasy · official installer app

What you need: A Windows, macOS or Linux computer, a USB cable and the iodé installer app. Installing erases the phone.

Apps: microG, plus a built-in tracker and ad blocker you can tune per app. Bootloader: On some devices; check iodé's device list.

  1. Check that your exact model is on iodé's supported device list.
  2. Download the iodé installer for your computer.
  3. Turn on Developer options, USB debugging and OEM unlocking on the phone, then connect it.
  4. Follow the installer step by step; it downloads the right build and flashes it.
  5. Set up the phone and look at the blocker settings in the iodé app.
On the Fairphone (Gen. 6) with /e/OSThe iodéOS installer for Windows or Linux supports the FP6 and FP6+. You can relock the bootloader afterwards.

Updates: Monthly from iodé. Official instructions: official iodéOS installer.

Installing LineageOSAdvanced · fastboot and recovery

What you need: A computer with Android platform-tools (adb and fastboot) installed, a USB cable, and an evening. Follow the install page for your exact codename. Installing erases the phone.

Apps: No Google services by default; you add microG or Google apps yourself if you want them. Bootloader: Usually no: the bootloader stays unlocked on most devices.

  1. Find your phone's page on the LineageOS wiki by its codename and read the whole install guide once before you start.
  2. Make sure the stock firmware is the version the guide asks for, then unlock the bootloader the brand's official way.
  3. Flash the partitions the guide lists (such as boot, dtbo or vendor_boot) and boot into Lineage Recovery.
  4. In recovery, choose Factory reset → Format data, then Apply update → Apply from ADB, and run adb sideload with the LineageOS zip.
  5. Reboot. Add F-Droid for apps; skip the optional Google apps package if you want to stay degoogled.
On the Fairphone (Gen. 6) with /e/OSFollow the LineageOS wiki guide for FP6. LineageOS normally runs with the bootloader left unlocked.

Updates: Weekly community builds; security patch level depends on the device's vendor code. Official instructions: LineageOS device wiki.
