The moto g 5G (2024) is Motorola’s budget 5G phone for the US, released in March 2024 with Android 14. It is one of the cheapest new phones on CalyxOS’s official device list, and LineageOS also supports it, already on Android 17.

For the price you get a 6.6-inch 120 Hz screen, a Snapdragon 4 Gen 1, 128 GB of storage with a microSD slot up to 1 TB, a 5,000 mAh battery, a headphone jack, NFC and eSIM. Installing CalyxOS keeps verified boot working because its flasher relocks the bootloader, which matters more for security than the low price suggests.

The trade-offs are short support and Motorola’s unlock process. CalyxOS estimates security updates only until March 2027. Motorola requires you to request an unlock code on its website, says that ends your warranty, and new phones can take up to a week before the unlock switch works. The hardware is basic too: 4 GB of RAM and a 720p LCD. Check the model number as well, because LineageOS lists only the XT2417-1, and the similarly named international moto g34 and g45 are different phones.

  • /e/OS: Listed on /e/OS's device page as a community build for XT2417-1 only; the bootloader can't be relocked.

Unlocking the bootloader on the Motorola moto g 5G (2024)

Yes, but Motorola makes you request an unlock code on its website, and getting the code ends your Motorola warranty. New phones can take up to a week before the OEM unlocking switch becomes available.

  1. Take out the SIM card and connect the phone to Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap Settings > About phone > Build number seven times, then turn on OEM unlocking in Settings > System > Developer options.
  3. If OEM unlocking is greyed out, keep the phone online and try again over the next few days.
  4. Sign in to Motorola's bootloader unlock site, accept the legal terms and follow its steps to get your unlock code.
  5. Reboot into fastboot (hold Volume Down + Power with the phone off) and enter the code to unlock; this wipes the phone.
  6. Install CalyxOS with its flasher, which relocks the bootloader at the end.
Before you start
  • Motorola: once you receive the unlock code, the phone is no longer covered by its warranty.
  • On new Motorola phones it can take up to a week before OEM unlocking can be switched on (CalyxOS and LineageOS guides).
  • Motorola warns your carrier may not allow unlocked devices on its network, and unlocking the bootloader doesn't remove a carrier SIM lock.
  • LineageOS and /e/OS list only model XT2417-1; check the model number in Settings > About phone before buying.
  • The international moto g34 5G and g45 5G (codename fogos) are different phones with their own builds.

How to install a private OS on the Motorola moto g 5G (2024)

Short versions of each project's official guide. Always keep the official page open while you work: it has the exact files for your model and changes faster than any summary.

Installing CalyxOSModerate · official flasher

What you need: A Windows, macOS or Linux computer, a USB-C cable, and the CalyxOS device flasher plus the factory image for your exact model. Installing erases the phone.

Apps: microG, optional: a free re-implementation of Google services for push and maps. Bootloader: Yes on supported devices; the flasher locks it at the end.

  1. Download the device flasher for your computer and the factory image for your model from calyxos.org.
  2. On the phone, turn on Developer options and OEM unlocking (some brands need an unlock code first, see the bootloader section above).
  3. Restart into the bootloader (fastboot) mode and connect the phone.
  4. Run the flasher and follow its prompts. It unlocks the bootloader, flashes CalyxOS and locks the bootloader again.
  5. During setup, choose whether to turn on microG. You can change your mind later.
On the Motorola moto g 5G (2024)Unlock the bootloader manually with Motorola's code first; CalyxOS's device-flasher doesn't handle that step. After that, the flasher installs CalyxOS and relocks.

Updates: From the Calyx Institute, monthly on supported devices. Official instructions: official CalyxOS install guide.

Installing LineageOSAdvanced · fastboot and recovery

What you need: A computer with Android platform-tools (adb and fastboot) installed, a USB cable, and an evening. Follow the install page for your exact codename. Installing erases the phone.

Apps: No Google services by default; you add microG or Google apps yourself if you want them. Bootloader: Usually no: the bootloader stays unlocked on most devices.

  1. Find your phone's page on the LineageOS wiki by its codename and read the whole install guide once before you start.
  2. Make sure the stock firmware is the version the guide asks for, then unlock the bootloader the brand's official way.
  3. Flash the partitions the guide lists (such as boot, dtbo or vendor_boot) and boot into Lineage Recovery.
  4. In recovery, choose Factory reset → Format data, then Apply update → Apply from ADB, and run adb sideload with the LineageOS zip.
  5. Reboot. Add F-Droid for apps; skip the optional Google apps package if you want to stay degoogled.
On the Motorola moto g 5G (2024)Make sure the phone is on stock Android 14 or 15 firmware, unlock, flash the dtbo and vendor_boot images, then install Lineage Recovery and sideload the build, as the wiki describes.

Updates: Weekly community builds; security patch level depends on the device's vendor code. Official instructions: LineageOS device wiki.

Installing /e/OSEasy · installer app, or preinstalled

What you need: For a phone you already own: a Windows, macOS or Linux computer and a USB cable. The Easy Installer covers many models; others use a command-line guide on the device's page. Installing erases the phone.

Apps: microG built in, plus the App Lounge store that shows each app's trackers. Bootloader: stays unlocked with this build.

  1. Look up your exact model on the /e/OS device list and check whether it supports the Easy Installer.
  2. Download the Easy Installer (or the build and guide from the device page) on your computer.
  3. Turn on Developer options, USB debugging and OEM unlocking on the phone, and connect it.
  4. Follow the installer's screens: it unlocks, flashes /e/OS and, where possible, relocks the bootloader.
  5. Set up the phone. A Murena account is optional; you can skip it.
On the Motorola moto g 5G (2024)Community build only, installed by command line; the bootloader stays unlocked, so verified boot protection is lost.

Updates: Monthly from the /e/ Foundation; Murena phones update over the air. Official instructions: /e/OS device list and install guides.
