The Motorola Edge (2024) is a US midrange phone launched in June 2024 at $549.99, with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, a 6.6-inch 144 Hz pOLED screen, a 5,000 mAh battery, 68 W wired and 15 W wireless charging, and an IP68 rating.

For privacy, the US model (codename avatrn, model numbers XT2405-1 and XT2405V) is an official LineageOS device with LineageOS 24.0 (Android 17) nightlies, and e Foundation publishes /e/OS community builds on Android 16. Motorola runs an official bootloader unlock program: you send a code from the phone to Motorola’s website and get an unlock key by email.

Know the costs first. Motorola states that the warranty ends once you get the unlock code. Carrier-sold units may not qualify. Do not mix this phone up with the international Edge 2024 or the Edge 50 series, which are different devices. The bootloader also stays unlocked after install, and the chip and 8 GB of RAM are midrange. iodéOS and CalyxOS do not list this model, so LineageOS and /e/OS are the two official choices. It is one of the cheaper ways to get an official LineageOS phone sold new in the US.

Unlocking the bootloader on the Motorola Edge (2024)

Yes for unlocked retail units. You request a free unlock key from Motorola's website; Motorola says the warranty ends once you get the code.

  1. Enable Developer options and turn on OEM unlocking (it can stay greyed out for up to a week on new Motorola phones).
  2. Run 'adb reboot bootloader', then 'fastboot oem get_unlock_data'.
  3. Paste the joined string into Motorola's bootloader unlock page while signed in and accept the terms.
  4. Motorola emails a key; run 'fastboot oem unlock <key>' and confirm on the phone.
  5. The phone wipes; re-enable USB debugging before flashing.
Before you start
  • Motorola states that once you get the unlock code, the device is no longer covered by its warranty.
  • Carrier-sold units may not be eligible for Motorola's unlock program; buy the unlocked retail model.
  • LineageOS supports only XT2405-1 and XT2405V; the international 'Edge 2024' and Edge 50 series are different phones.
  • LineageOS needs stock Android 14, 15 or 16 firmware installed first.

How to install a private OS on the Motorola Edge (2024)

Short versions of each project's official guide. Always keep the official page open while you work: it has the exact files for your model and changes faster than any summary.

Installing LineageOSAdvanced · fastboot and recovery

What you need: A computer with Android platform-tools (adb and fastboot) installed, a USB cable, and an evening. Follow the install page for your exact codename. Installing erases the phone.

Apps: No Google services by default; you add microG or Google apps yourself if you want them. Bootloader: Usually no: the bootloader stays unlocked on most devices.

  1. Find your phone's page on the LineageOS wiki by its codename and read the whole install guide once before you start.
  2. Make sure the stock firmware is the version the guide asks for, then unlock the bootloader the brand's official way.
  3. Flash the partitions the guide lists (such as boot, dtbo or vendor_boot) and boot into Lineage Recovery.
  4. In recovery, choose Factory reset → Format data, then Apply update → Apply from ADB, and run adb sideload with the LineageOS zip.
  5. Reboot. Add F-Droid for apps; skip the optional Google apps package if you want to stay degoogled.
On the Motorola Edge (2024)Follow the avatrn guide; it flashes boot, dtbo, vbmeta and vendor_boot before the LineageOS recovery. Check the model number in Settings > About phone first.

Updates: Weekly community builds; security patch level depends on the device's vendor code. Official instructions: LineageOS device wiki.

Installing /e/OSEasy · installer app, or preinstalled

What you need: For a phone you already own: a Windows, macOS or Linux computer and a USB cable. The Easy Installer covers many models; others use a command-line guide on the device's page. Installing erases the phone.

Apps: microG built in, plus the App Lounge store that shows each app's trackers. Bootloader: stays unlocked with this build.

  1. Look up your exact model on the /e/OS device list and check whether it supports the Easy Installer.
  2. Download the Easy Installer (or the build and guide from the device page) on your computer.
  3. Turn on Developer options, USB debugging and OEM unlocking on the phone, and connect it.
  4. Follow the installer's screens: it unlocks, flashes /e/OS and, where possible, relocks the bootloader.
  5. Set up the phone. A Murena account is optional; you can skip it.
On the Motorola Edge (2024)Command-line install from the /e/OS avatrn page; builds are 'community' releases on Android 16.

Updates: Monthly from the /e/ Foundation; Murena phones update over the air. Official instructions: /e/OS device list and install guides.
