SHIFTphone 8

The SHIFTphone 8 comes from SHIFT, a small company in Falkenberg, Germany, that builds modular phones in its own factory in China. The current model is the SHIFTphone 8.1, which adds 2G support to the original 8.0, and its software officially launched in January 2026. It costs €695 plus a €22 device deposit, and SHIFT ships to Germany and most EU countries.
For privacy buyers, the standout feature is hardware kill switches that cut power to the cameras and microphones. SHIFT also promises security updates until 2036, keeps the warranty valid if you change the OS, and offers its own Google-free ShiftOS L. CalyxOS, iodéOS and LineageOS list it officially, and Murena sells it with /e/OS preinstalled for €774.99. The hardware is generous: 12 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage, microSD, IP66, Qi charging and a battery you can swap in under a minute.
The trade-offs are waiting and support dates. Standard delivery is about 12 weeks, and CalyxOS’s own table only commits to December 2026 for now, so check its device-support page again before you choose CalyxOS.

- iodéOS: iodé lists the SHIFT8 as installer-compatible with a relockable bootloader, VoLTE/VoWiFi and 5G.
- /e/OS: Murena sells a SHIFTphone 8 with /e/OS preinstalled for €774.99; the official build is still on an Android 14 base.

Not available for this model

Privacy scores and effort levels are explained in how we score each system; the feature-by-feature OS table goes deeper.
Do you need to flash anything?
SHIFT actively supports custom ROMs, and the bootloader unlocks with the standard OEM unlocking toggle; CalyxOS's guide for this phone lists no unlock code. SHIFT says installing another OS does not void the warranty.
- Tap Settings > About phone > Build number seven times to enable Developer options.
- In Settings > System > Developer options, turn on OEM unlocking (it may need an internet connection).
- Reboot into fastboot mode and connect the phone to a computer.
- Run your chosen OS's installer or flasher, which unlocks the bootloader and installs the system.
- Relock the bootloader at the end if the OS supports it (CalyxOS's flasher does this for you).
- SHIFT's 2-year warranty stays valid if you install another OS or repair the phone yourself.
- There are two variants: the SHIFTphone 8.0 (4G/5G only) and the 8.1 (adds 2G); LineageOS uses one build for both.
- CalyxOS's support table lists security updates for this phone only to December 2026 (estimated), far shorter than SHIFT's own 2036 promise.
- The /e/OS build is on an older Android 14 base than the other OSes.
How to install a private OS on the SHIFTphone 8
Short versions of each project's official guide. Always keep the official page open while you work: it has the exact files for your model and changes faster than any summary.
Installing CalyxOSModerate · official flasher
What you need: A Windows, macOS or Linux computer, a USB-C cable, and the CalyxOS device flasher plus the factory image for your exact model. Installing erases the phone.
Apps: microG, optional: a free re-implementation of Google services for push and maps. Bootloader: Yes on supported devices; the flasher locks it at the end.
- Download the device flasher for your computer and the factory image for your model from calyxos.org.
- On the phone, turn on Developer options and OEM unlocking (some brands need an unlock code first, see the bootloader section above).
- Restart into the bootloader (fastboot) mode and connect the phone.
- Run the flasher and follow its prompts. It unlocks the bootloader, flashes CalyxOS and locks the bootloader again.
- During setup, choose whether to turn on microG. You can change your mind later.
Installing iodéOSEasy · official installer app
What you need: A Windows, macOS or Linux computer, a USB cable and the iodé installer app. Installing erases the phone.
Apps: microG, plus a built-in tracker and ad blocker you can tune per app. Bootloader: On some devices; check iodé's device list.
- Check that your exact model is on iodé's supported device list.
- Download the iodé installer for your computer.
- Turn on Developer options, USB debugging and OEM unlocking on the phone, then connect it.
- Follow the installer step by step; it downloads the right build and flashes it.
- Set up the phone and look at the blocker settings in the iodé app.
Setting up /e/OSPreinstalled
What you need: For a phone you already own: a Windows, macOS or Linux computer and a USB cable. The Easy Installer covers many models; others use a command-line guide on the device's page. Installing erases the phone.
Apps: microG built in, plus the App Lounge store that shows each app's trackers.
- Look up your exact model on the /e/OS device list and check whether it supports the Easy Installer.
- Download the Easy Installer (or the build and guide from the device page) on your computer.
- Turn on Developer options, USB debugging and OEM unlocking on the phone, and connect it.
- Follow the installer's screens: it unlocks, flashes /e/OS and, where possible, relocks the bootloader.
- Set up the phone. A Murena account is optional; you can skip it.
Installing LineageOSAdvanced · fastboot and recovery
What you need: A computer with Android platform-tools (adb and fastboot) installed, a USB cable, and an evening. Follow the install page for your exact codename. Installing erases the phone.
Apps: No Google services by default; you add microG or Google apps yourself if you want them. Bootloader: Usually no: the bootloader stays unlocked on most devices.
- Find your phone's page on the LineageOS wiki by its codename and read the whole install guide once before you start.
- Make sure the stock firmware is the version the guide asks for, then unlock the bootloader the brand's official way.
- Flash the partitions the guide lists (such as boot, dtbo or vendor_boot) and boot into Lineage Recovery.
- In recovery, choose Factory reset → Format data, then Apply update → Apply from ADB, and run adb sideload with the LineageOS zip.
- Reboot. Add F-Droid for apps; skip the optional Google apps package if you want to stay degoogled.

SHIFTphone 8 questions, answered
Does installing CalyxOS or another OS void the SHIFTphone 8 warranty?
No. SHIFT says its 2-year warranty stays valid if you install a different operating system or repair the phone. The battery has a 12-month warranty.
What is the difference between the SHIFTphone 8.0 and 8.1?
SHIFT says the 8.0 uses only 4G and 5G networks, while the 8.1 adds 2G. LineageOS uses the same build for both.
Can I buy the SHIFTphone 8 without Google?
Yes. SHIFT offers ShiftOS L without Google services, and Murena sells it with /e/OS preinstalled. Phones from SHIFT ship with ShiftOS G (with Google) by default, so you switch to ShiftOS L or another OS yourself.
